Fall is upon us and, with it, October brings Cybersecurity Awareness Month. We continue to integrate technology into every facet of our lives and with that, we need to be ever more vigilant in not just our cyber awareness but also of the rest of our family, friends, work, and environment in general. Below are some tips for beginning and maintaining a successful cybersecurity plan for everything around you:
Scams by text and email, as well as data breaches, have become a regular part of our daily lives. Often, we make ourselves vulnerable by sharing personal information. Whether it is for shopping online or home automation, we open ourselves up to vulnerabilities on a regular basis. Imagine you’re playing an online video game with your friends, streaming online, or whatever you do to pass the time with your favorite online game, when out of nowhere an image takes over your computer and starts issuing threatening messages with a robotic voice. Normally, this sort of thing only happens on TV, but on January 21st, this happened during a livestream to a streamer named ‘The__Grim__Sleeper.’ Two days later, the developers of the Dark Souls franchise announced that multiplayer for all of the Dark Souls games, including their upcoming Elden Rings game, has been taken offline until the issue is resolved.
However, providers with less than 100,000 subscribers have until June 30, 2023 to implement STIR/SHAKEN. This is important because the FCC found that most illegal robocalls come from a subset of these small providers, which has prompted the agency to propose shortening the adoption period by one year.
We all hate Robocalls and scammers persistently calling our phones and you may have sensed an increase in the frequency of this common nuisance. You are correct.
So far in 2021, Americans have received a monthly average of 30.7 spam calls, compared to 28.0 in 2020, according to a June 2021 report from Truecaller. Robocalls represented 21.5 of the average monthly spam calls, or 70%.
